By the middle of Thursday, Sabu had completely recovered from the operation and was eating and behaving normally again; Antoine and Belle were happy to let him re-join the other tigers in the main enclosure.

On Friday, Geri and Antoine had a day off, and they headed to see the Monets at the Musée de l’Orangerie and the Musée D’Orsay.

It was as wonderful as she expected; but Ant surprised her when they stopped to admire van Gogh’s Starry Night Over the Rhône. ‘I love this painting,’ she said to Antoine. ‘It’s much more peaceful than the other Starry Night. Here, it feels like a beautiful evening and he’s caught the joy of the sparkling stars and the lights from the building reflected in the water.’

‘That’s very you,’ he said. ‘Seeing the sparkle.’

His smile made her catch her breath; he was definitely paying her a compliment rather than being snippy. Did that mean he was starting to see her as something other than his colleague or his friend? she wondered. Because she was definitely starting to feel that way about him—even though it was risky and the idea of trusting her heart to someone again terrified her. She knew Antoine wanted children; so did she. But what if she couldn’t have them? The Q fever that had caused her miscarriage made everything that much more complicated. It was the thing that had stopped her moving on, and she still didn’t know how to get past it.

She smiled back and kept the conversation light until they got to the top floor, where they found the clock and admired the views of Paris. Antoine was taking a snap of her by the huge glass clock when a tourist asked, ‘Would you like me to take a picture of you and your partner together?’

Partner. Did they look like a couple? Could they be a couple? The possibility made all her senses hum. She liked Antoine—she more than liked the man she was getting to know—but did he feel the same? She glanced at him, only to see that he looked as flustered as she felt. Better to be sensible, then.

‘We’re just good friends,’ she said with a smile, ‘but yes, please.’
